911 immediately because the process can be slow and it is
imperative to get help as soon as possible. Why? Because you
need expertise, help, materials, meds and more.
Also, with adults, the most common cause of falling unconscious
is a cardiac problem in which case you need a defibrillator.
Moreover, there are exceptions when you first perform 2 minutes
of first-aid and then go call 911 (see the technique section).
The explanation being that those emergencies affect the respiratory
system primarily as opposed to the cardiovascular system.
Opening the airway and giving breaths precedes calling 911
because you can save the victim's life.
